Refugee Rights Turkey held a comprehensive two-day Refugee Law Training for Lawyers in the city of Sanliurfa in Southeast Turkey on 3-4 October, in collaboration with the local bar association.
Sanliurfa by the Syria border currently hosts over 400 000 refugees from neighboring Syria. While about 100 000 are sheltered in 5 large scale camps spread across the province, the remainder live in the Sanliurfa city center and surrounding residential areas. Back in October 2014, Sanliurfa had received a 200 000-strong refugee wave of Kurdish Syrians escaping from the violence in the town of Kobane.
The two-day introductory training aimed to assist the efforts of the local bar association towards building expertise and capacity to extend legal aid services to asylum seekers resident in Sanliurfa. After the training, the RRT Delegation also undertook a round of consultation visits to the provincial Directorate General of Migration Management (DGMM), NGOs working in the province and representatives of the UNHCR Field Unit stationed in Sanliurfa.
The training event in Sanliurfa was organized within the framework of the comprehensive project currently implemented by RRT in affiliation with American partner organization Refugee Solidarity Network. The Dutch Council of Refugees also provides expertise and additional financial support to the project.
