Training for Bar Associations and NGOs from South and Southeastern Turkey

On 3-4 March 2018, Refugee Rights Turkey hosted a training on asylum and migration law for representatives of bar associations and NGOs from various provinces in South and Southeastern Turkey. The training was organized in the framework of a joint project implemented by International Commission of Jurists (ICJ), ECRE, Refugee Rights Turkey and Mülteci-Der.

The joint project, which is funded by the European Instrument for Democracy and Human Rights (EIDHR) Turkey Program and was initiated last year, aims to enhance access to justice for migrants, refugees and asylum-seekers in Turkey by strengthening the knowledge of lawyers and NGO legal practitioners in Turkey on relevant European and international standards and supporting the legal aid system in Turkey administered by bar associations.

Previously, 3 similar regional trainings were delivered under the project. The first regional training in November last year, also hosted by Refugee Rights Turkey, covered bar associations and NGOs from provinces in Northwestern Turkey; the second training in December covered Western Turkey; and the third training last month covered provinces in Central regional of Turkey. The 3-4 March training in Istanbul was the last of the series of regional trainings envisioned under the project.

The two-day seminar program featured experts from the 4 project partners and introduced participants to relevant international and European standards in comparison and contrast with the Turkish migration and asylum legislation. The participants were also presented the first draft of the training modules generated under the project, the final versions of which will be published later this year. The range of capacity-building activities planned under the project will continue in the coming months.
